Malta, a jewel in the Mediterranean boasting 300 days of sunshine on average per year.
Valletta, The Fortress City, is Malta’s capital. Busy by day, yet retains a timeless atmosphere by night, that gives the feeling that you are walking back in time. The grid of narrow streets boasts some of Europe’s finest art works, churches and palaces. Abundantly rich in sites to see and explore, intriguing historical buildings around every corner: votive statues, niches, fountains and coats of arms high up on parapets. Narrow side streets are full of tiny quaint shops and cafés, while Valletta’s main streets are lined with larger international branded shops for fashion, music, jewellery and much more. There is much to see and do in a comparatively small area making it an ideal short break destination.
St John’s Co-Cathederal built between 1573 and 1577 and dedicated to the patron saint of the knights, with its severe exterior the interior is sumptuous and colourful in contrast. Knights were buried here and the cathedral is rich in frescoes and works of art including Caravaggio’s “The Beheading of St John”.
Grand Master’s Palace, a huge palace completed around 1580 and today is the seat of the president and parliament. Some parts are open to the public including The Tapestry Chamber hosting a unique collection of Gobelin tapestries and the Armoury housing a fascinating collection of weapons and suits of armour.
Mdina, the old medieval capital of the island, is one of Europe’s finest examples of an ancient walled city and extraordinary in its mix of medieval and baroque architecture.
The Blue Grotto, the largest of a number of caves reached only by boat, surrounded by breathtaking scenery. This picturesque grotto and its neighbouring system of caverns mirrors the brilliant phosphorescent colours of the underwater flora.

About Sundreams Travel – Luxury Weekend in Valletta, Malta for Two People
The islands of Malta have been inhabited since around 5200 BC. The first inhabitants known are from a Neolithic culture and these are witnessed by the many Megalithic structures found around the islands. The Phoenicians colonised the islands on around 1000 BC and brought about the Semitic language and culture. These were followed by the Carthaginians and the Romans at around 216 BC who made Malta a municipium. A period of Byzantine rule followed and then an invasion by the Arabs in AD 870. The Normans came next in 1091 and these were welcomed by the then Christian natives. In 1530 the Malta was given to the Order of the Knights of St John who fortified the island, built the capital city of Valletta and lots of other palaces and castles around Malta, Gozo & Comino. In 1798 Napoleon took over Malta for a couple of years before the islands became a British Colony in 1814. The British developed Malta as an important naval base and the island was under constant threat from German and Italian forces during the war. In recognition of the hardship the local people endured during this time and their heroic defence, Malta was awarded the George Cross, Britain’s highest civilian decoration. The islands got their independence in 1964 and became a member of the Commonwealth joining the EU in 2004.
Most of the remains and architecture left by the various inhabitants of our islands can still be experienced today. The vast historical influence left by these occupants make Malta a unique place for one to indulge in a vast array of different cultures and to understand the mix they created making Malta and it’s people what they are today.
